Longer, but less exciting than the Eastern section. This is a fun winding climb along a creek at 7–8% grade. The road surface transitions from good to excellent near the top of the ridge, then drops back down to poor on the descent. Watch for the marked dip near the summit - it will cause problems for your suspension if you're over 45mph.
There's a tight, one-lane section between two rock outcroppings on the way down; go slow and watch for other drivers. After the narrow spot, the view will open to beautiful Sierra Nevada views into Bishop and the Owens Valley.
Do it if you're in the area, but it's not the reason to come. If you're coming from the California side, push on to the significantly better Eastern section at the other side of the valley.
Traffic: 5 = empty road, 1 = very busy.
