About This Road

The upper section on the Highway 36 side is delightful: very tight, very technical, with lots of switchbacks shedding serious elevation. Road surface and curves feel like the backside of Mount Hamilton. The lower section on the Redding side transitions to rolling farmland with fun blind crests.

Road surface is poor (especially upper section). Heading from West to East, I didn't have any traffic in front of me, but did see a few cars coming up; stay on your side on the corners even when there isn't a centerline as several of the oncoming vehicles were large trucks taking up more than their share of the road.

Watch for big drop-offs with no guardrails on the outer edge in the upper section. If you're someone who doesn't like that kind of exposure, do the drive from East to West starting in Redding; that will keep you in the lane closer to the mountainside rather than the side with the big drop off.

This road is one in which the sum is greater than its parts; a highly enjoyable byroad that is worth a drive.
