A strong transit stage with some brilliant tight technical sections mixed into mostly long fourth/fifth-gear sweepers. Road surface is generally good with a few washed-out sections. A major artery between the Central Valley and the coast, so it can get very congested—not a lot of passing opportunities.
Good road, but busier than it deserves to be. From recollection, the section between Platina and Red Bluff is also lovely, but I like the Platina/Igo road more, so I haven't driven the final stretch in the last 20 years.
There aren't many places to stop and eat, but the ASCC has had burgers at the Mad River Burger Bar on two separate occasions and found them pretty tasty.
Traffic: 5 = empty road, 1 = very busy.
