If you continue past Lick Observatory, you'll find a lovely little drive down into the San Antonio Valley. The best section is the first few miles after passing the observatory which includes several beautiful hairpins and tight corners, but the whole thing is a nice drive.
The road has not been resurfaced recently and is rough at places. Beware for several bump sections that can cause your suspension to bottom out. Also, look out for cattle grates which will do a number on your suspension.
When exiting, you can continue on the 130 out to Patterson at I-5, or take Mines Road out to Livermore. The 130 to Patterson is more fun, although last time we did it it had several really bad rough sections with big bumps. Mines Road is a nice backcountry transit stage. Part of it is single lane, and it looks fun on the map, but I've been underwhelmed the two times I've driven it. Use it if you're trying to get back to the Bay Area to continue North while avoiding traffic, but you'd almost be in better shape if you just turn around and drive back to San Jose via the Mount Hamilton Road you've already traveled on since it is just so fun.
Traffic: 5 = empty road, 1 = very busy.
