About This Road

If you drive this route from the Happy Camp side, you'll find curves, but they won't be much fun because the road surface is very bad. This section of the road goes through a burn area and in addition to denuding the hills of trees, the fire did a number on the road. It's not well maintained, there's no centerline, and in several places you'll need to use the entire road to avoid major holes or bumps. Once you start your descent on the Oregon side, however, you'll find a much nicer road surface and some twisties to sink your teeth into. This would be a good side-quest if you're heading from Grant's Pass to the coast on 199 as well; just go up until you hit the snow park at the top, then turn around and you'll have seen this road's best features.

If you're looking for a meal in Cave Junction head to Gimmie's at the golf course. We had one of the best burgers on any of our trips there.
