About This Road

This is a tasty little out-and-back starting in downtown Azusa, CA and climbing up to the washed out road just past Crystal Lake turn-off. Originally a connector from the valley to Angeles Crest Highway, the road was destroyed by a rock slide in 1978. The road is a true hill-climb as you gain around 4,200 feet from the start to the finish. Beautiful sweeping views are available at the many turn-outs, but you won't be focusing on them if you have a fun car.

This road has a decent surface with many tight, technical sections. Watch for rocks and dirt in the road on both the lower, canyon section, and the upper, final section. I took out a front spoiler on the admittedly low '89 325i with a rock in the canyon section on one drive.

If you get a clean run with no traffic, this road is magical; everything you want in an enthusiast drive. However, I've only had one really clean run. Most of the time you're dealing with slower drivers who are out to see the scenery or access the many hiking and camping areas that abound on this route. Morning and midday on weekdays or very early on the weekend are you best bet.

As a bonus, you can access Glendora Mountain Road, so instead of an out-and-back you can turn this into a loop up to Mount San Antonio.
